GoodByWeekly #1: Third Places and 6/8 Soul

What’s up y’all, it’s your boy AD on the keyboard this week. After a devastating loss to Taylor Swift in the Super Bowl to close out Lunar New Year the Bay Area is hurting. I’ll try to bring some positivity to the situation by reminding everyone we made it to a Super Bowl in Allegiant Stadium before the Raiders did! For those of y’all who don’t care about football, don’t worry all I got you! We’ve got a entertainment and fashion filled newsletter for you and you know my taste is always 🔥.

6/8 Soul and RnB 🎹🎶

One of my favorite artists of all time is Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On is a timeless classic and I wanted to find more music in that soul genre that had that soulful groove, when I started to deep dive I found out about the 6/8 time signature in music. This time signature has given us some amazing tracks like ‘Can I Call You Rose?’ by Thee Sacred Souls and ‘Pink+White’ by Frank Ocean. I found a playlist that has some great 6/8 Soul tracks, put together by Derrick Gee (@gee_derrick). Take a listen!

“Why Third Places Matter 3️⃣”

In the last couple of weeks I’ve spent most of my time outside of my home, not in bars or restaurants but at a local rec center, at the gym, and in coffee shops in my neighborhood. I bring this up because I’ve made some great people and started a few new friendships all because I fought against the coercive forces of being chronically online. I even gave up wearing headphones everywhere I go because I wanted to be more connected to the world around me.

These “Third Places”, places that aren’t work or our homes, provide a sense of psychological wellbeing and restoration that work against the negative impacts of urban environments and stressful lives on our well being. Studies like this one by UC Riverside about the effect of a lack of third places on students done by UC Riverside or this one from the University of Michigan about the impact that the closure of third places has had on urban residents, explore the connection between our environment and our emotional well being. Social interactions as simple as having a barista that you enjoy talking to every morning matter and the places that you have them in matter as well.

Which brings me to my point, if you are able to, invest more time and energy in places like coffee shops, game stores, restaurants, gyms, etc. Build community through sharing space and connecting with those around you, we’re not meant to spend our lives watching others through a screen. You deserve to live a life full of people and positivity.

Books of the Week📚👀

So earlier this week I was shopping at H Mart and they were playing some great music that made me feel some deep nostalgia and I joked with Dave that I was crying in H Mart. Which is why my first book recommendation is Crying In H Mart a memoir by Michelle Chongmi Zauner. In it Michelle tells her story of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; struggling with the high expectations her mom had of her; and months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother were able to bond over traditional Korean food. 10/10 if you want to feel someone else’s pain.

My second spoiler free recommendation is The Midnight Library. It’s a pretty fun read that gives Everysing Everywhere All at Once Vibes, if you’ve ever felt like your life wasn’t on track and would be better if you had made different choices or if you felt like someone was living a life that you thought should be yours this book reminds your impact is greater that you can see and more important than you give yourself credit for. If you get hooked you’ll breeze through it’s super interesting Sci-Fi story. 13.75/10 for making me remember how dope it is to be alive.

Brand of the Week🔥

About:Blank for some elevated basic for those of y’all who rock with cropped proportions and clean silhouettes.

Another brand we all know and love in the basics space that does great silhouettes is Uniqlo, I specifically recommend pieces from their U Crew Neck T-Shirt for anyone who needs a solid T that can carry an outfit build on layering.
